SEO is such an integral part of web development. Without SEO none of our websites would get any traffic, but what is SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.
A search engine is what we use to navigate the internet. The most common website is ‘Google’ but others also exist, such as ‘Bing’ by Microsoft or ‘DuckDuckGo’. Each search engine has its criteria it looks for when looking at websites.
These search engines have millions of little robots that crawl through the internet and try to file everything in an orderly way so that when you search for something they can offer you the best information possible.
Each little robot looks for certain things on a website and ranks websites on many criteria. The higher your rank, the more likely it will be that a search engine will show your website when someone searches for you. If you aren’t aware of what a search engine is looking for, chances are your website won’t rank very well.
That’s where SEO specialists come in. These are people that study SEO patterns and practices and know how to optimize a website to help improve SEO results. Better SEO means more traffic to your website. Eventually, you will find that even without paid traffic your website will be bringing in a substantial amount of people.
The problem with SEO is that it’s a very difficult problem to tackle. There are billions of pages on the internet. All trying to rank well and collect website traffic. You can’t just flip a switch and expect to jump to the top of the pile. SEO takes a lot of work, first optimizing all of your current website pages and then building fresh content targeting keywords that you want to rank for. On top of that, there’s also link building and many other practices that help increase your ranking.
It can take months before you start seeing any real results. But when you start climbing the ladder and ranking well for your search terms. Then you can start generating organic traffic. It is an investment that pays off in the long run. Free traffic to your website can help you generate a lot of income without having to spend a small fortune on digital marketing.
There are ways to cut corners and rank faster, these are tactics that are condemned by Google and other search engines. These are called ‘Black Hat’ SEO and they can help you rank quickly without having to put in hours of work. But if you are caught using these tactics, Google will punish you and possibly remove your website from their registry.
I do not recommend using black hat SEO tactics and would rather recommend you leave SEO to a professional. We spend a lot of time studying trends and collecting data to help improve your ranking and boost traffic numbers. High rankings built on strong SEO strategies are much less likely to fall and you will be seeing long term gains from the effort you put in.
